THE ORGANIC MARKET CONTINUES TO GROW

More and more consumers are being seduced by organic products, and to meet this growing demand, the supply of organic agricultural products is growing exponentially.

To meet the growing consumer demand for organic products, organic farming has been following a strong growth trend for several years. Today, 57.8 million hectares in 178 countries are cultivated without chemical inputs. This represents an increase of 7.5 million hectares compared to 2015: the largest growth on record. Australia is the country with the largest area of land cultivated without chemical inputs with 27.2 million hectares. This is followed by Germany with 3 million hectares and China with 2.3 million hectares.

According to Ecovia Intellignece, a market research specialist, this sector generated a turnover of $89.7 billion in 2016, or Dh825 billion. The countries with the highest demand for this type of product are: the United States with 441 billion Dh, Germany with 107.7 billion Dh, France (76 billion Dh) and China (67 billion Dh).

If we look at the expenditure per capita, it is in Switzerland that they are the highest: the Swiss spend an average of Dh3,108 on these products. Denmark has the highest market share with 9.7% of food products being organic.
